We are CBAM Ready!

Understanding the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM)

The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is a new initiative by the European Union aimed at addressing ‘carbon leakage’ and promoting global industrial decarbonisation. CBAM stands for Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, a policy designed to ensure that imported goods face the same carbon costs as those produced within the EU.

What is CBAM?

The scheme has been introduced in a phased approach and from 2026 CBAM will essentially act as a tariff on carbon-intensive products such as cement, iron and steel, aluminium, fertilisers, electricity, and hydrogen. It requires importers to declare the carbon emissions embedded in their goods and purchase CBAM certificates corresponding to these emissions. The price of these certificates is linked to the EU Emissions Trading System, ensuring that the carbon price of imports is equivalent to the carbon price of domestic production.

Why is CBAM Important?

CBAM acts as a mechanism to support the fight against climate change by tackling carbon leakage. Carbon leakage occurs when companies produce carbon-intensive products outside of the EU, then import these products into the EU, which may have lower or different carbon and environmental standards. The aim is to provide a level playing field and to support greater global adoption of more sustainable technologies, promoting global decarbonisation efforts.

Why We Are Now CBAM Ready

As we approach the official CBAM regime in 2026, the transitional phase (2023-2025) has allowed both importers and exporters to adapt to the new reporting requirements. With these measures in place, we are now CBAM ready. In collaboration with CBAMBOO, and by using the CBAMBOO Platform, we can provide carbon reporting for all our products to our EU customers, ensuring they have full visibility of the carbon data to help them comply with their CBAM obligations during this transitional phase.

For more information on CBAM, please visit the European Commission and CBAMBOO websites.

January 2022

We are pleased to announce that a number of employees of Beacon Corporation have recently qualified as Emergency First Aiders and are now able to provide potential lifesaving first aid if needed.

As part of our ongoing commitment to protect the wellbeing of our employees, visitors, and the wider public, we have also invested in an AED for our site. Hopefully we will never have to use this, but it is now installed and online, ready for use if ever needed and there are multiple people on site, trained to deliver life saving first aid.

Well done to all those involved in this initiative.
